Where You At Wednesday : MTV VJ Edition!

I think everyone above the age of about 16 can agree that MTV has gone downhill since the early 90′s. There are less music videos, worse shows, and incredibly bad MTV VJ’s these days. It’s borderline ridiculous. I decided for this week’s WU@W to see what some of the better and more famous MTV VJ’s from the past are up to these days. Take a look!

Downtown Julie Brown

Let’s just get it out in the open….Downtown Julie Brown was hot. As if I needed to tell you that. She hosted the corny dance show MTV Club that you can see above. Man is that a funny video. Look at the outfits and the way people were getting their groove on. I must admit, as funny as that video above is, I wish that’s how life was these days. I fit in better in that type of environment. Dumb dancing was appreciated in those days. Julie even hosted the VMA’s in 1987. Since leaving the network, she posed for Playboy in 1998 (anyone got copies?) and has had small roles in a number of things like “Spy Hard,” “Walker, Texas Ranger,” and even the recent “I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here”. She is now 49 years old and living in California with her husband and daughter.

Kennedy

Kennedy was no slouch either, she was pretty hot back in the day as well. She’s one of those girls that can really pull off the glasses. She was best known for hosting “Alternative Nation” at night, but MTV would often call on her to do interviews. I believe she even got to do an interview special with ‘Pac shortly before his demise (could be wrong on that, don’t quote me). Currently she is an occasional commentator on VH1′s “Best Week Ever” and hosts an LA radio show called “Kennedy & Suits”.

Jesse Camp

jesse_camp

Just as I came out and said that Kennedy and Downtown Julie Brown were hot above, I’m going to call a spade a spade here and say it: Jesse Camp was a douche. Easily my most hated VJ of the era. His voice was annoying, he looked dirty, and he was not funny at all. His laugh sounded like a stoned hyena had a baby with Spicoli from Fast Times at Ridgemont High, and then that creation had a bastard lovechild with Fran Drescher. He only got on MTV from an online contest. Later, MTV found out a hacker (presumably someone associated with Camp) discovered a flaw in the program and made a bot that repeatedly voted for Camp. They even gave this clown his own show “Lunch with Jesse” at one point, even though it was short lived. In 2006 he was reported as working at a Pet feed store in Los Angeles and currently works for a non-profit called “Telefund” as a cold-caller raising money for liberal organizations. He was also spotted outside the TRL Farewell Party recently. There’s even a video of him on YouTube outside the party apparently trying to score an 8-ball of coke on his phone. I didn’t bother to even click that 7 minute video, but you can go peep it if you want.

Daisy Fuentes

Daisy Fuentes = also hot. Her stint on MTV was decently short lived, but it’s how she got her start. Since then, she’s had stints on America’s Funniest Home Videos, Dick Clark’s New Years Rockin’ Eve, and been a spokesperson for Revlon, Pantene, M&M’s, American Express, and Miller Lite. She currently lives with her fiance in Los Angeles. And she’s 42….and still super hot.

Ananda Lewis

Ananda Lewis wasn’t bad on the eyes either, and she always seemed super chill to me, like she would be the easiest VJ to just kick it with and talk music. After leaving MTV, she had her own talk show for a brief period. She has recently been the host of “Insider” (an “Entertainment Tonight” alternative), as well as a co-host of “America’s Top Dog” as she is a spokesperson for the Humane Society.

SPECIAL BONUS: KURT LODER

Above is the first 1988 promo for MTV NEWS. It stars…Kurt Loder. Where’s he at these days? Doing the same thing! You can still find him on MTV News. The most ridiculous part about this…..Kurt Loder is now 64 years old!!!

Five For Friday – July 11, 2008

So I’ve been out of town the past two Fridays and haven’t been able to get everyone that weekly heat. No worries, I’m back on my grizzly this week. Got some hot jams as usual to get you through that Friday in the office. Peep ‘em.

1. Portastatic  – This is a hot jam, Chapel Hill band, what more could you ask for. I’m pretty sure the guy from the band Superchunk (if you’ve heard of them) is the frontman here. This is by far their best song they have on RN.

2. Gwen Stefani featuring Akon – Now I usually am a Gwen Stefani hater. A lot of her shit gets super played out super quick. Maybe it’s because I’ve been avoiding both the radio and music television a lot lately, or maybe this song just isn’t as popular as her last singles, or maybe it just hasn’t annoyed me yet, but I kind of like this one. I might catch some hate for this one, I’m aware of that.

3. 13 Stories – Girl-fronted Pop band. This reminds me of something that could have been big in the late 80′s. Would be a fun jam for a party I think. Curious as to what peeps think of this one.

4. Kennedy – We all know Kennedy from “Your Mama,” but this is my second favorite track of his. Striaght rockin’!

5. CESAR COMANCHE – HOJ REPRESENT! One of Raleigh’s own right here, and a member of the Hall of Justus. I don’t need to say shit else, you know this is hot. (Sidenote for the hardcore HOJ fan – This song is to the beat that originally appeared on Little Brother’s Chitlin Circuit Volume 1 mixtape as the Krhysis Shoutro. I love how Cesar flips it).
