Where You At Wednesday: 1993 National Champions (UNC Men’s Bball) Starting Five

First off, thanks for all the suggestions yesterday to the Monster Blog’s twitter and Facebook for today’s Where You At Wednesday. In the end, we took a suggestion from @M_E_Woods , but the rest were recorded for future possibilities.

1993 wasn’t that long ago, but it was long enough ago that most of the players from this iconic team wouldn’t be playing anymore, which is why I chose this year as opposed to the 2009 or 2005 years. This team went 34-4, and beat the Fab 5 in the Championship.

Now, you haters out there are going to say something like “Chris Webber gave them the game with that time out…” Don’t get me started. For just a few reasons…including, but not limited too:

- Webber traveled before he called that timeout and it went uncalled

- Heels were already winning the game

- He only called timeout because he was trapped, in the corner, by 2 men. Defense wins championships.

Anyhow, let’s check the starting five from that team…

Where You At Wednesday – Infamous Plays Edition

Bill Buckner

bucknerbw1xl

How/Why You Know Him: A Red Sox first basemen, he let Mookie Wilson’s dribbling grounder go through his legs for a World Series Victory for the Mets.

Where He At Now: On April 8, 2008, he threw out the first pitch at Fenway Park and received a 4 minute standing ovation from the fans.  He currently lives in Idaho, where he does real estate.

Scott Norwood

How/Why You Know Him: He missed a GW field goal wide-right in Super Bowl XXV in 1991 against the Giants.

Where He At Now: Left Football a little more than one year after the incident above. No information available on what he is up to now.

Leon Lett

How/Why You Know Him:

Where He At Now: Fortunately for Lett, that play didn’t affect the outcome of that Super Bowl at all as the Bills got straight stomped. However, the following year, on Thanksgiving Day, Lett had another blunder of a play when he tried to recover a block FG attempt by the opposing Dolphins and slipped on the ice, but touched the ball. Miami recovered from his mistake and ended up winning the game.

On May 9, 2009, Lett graduated from UNLV with a degree in university studies with a concentration in sociology and history. Congrats Leon.

YOU MAY NOTICE TWO NAMES YOU MIGHT HAVE EXPECTED TO SEE HERE MISSING…..

Chris Webber didn’t make this list for 2 reasons:

1. You know where he is, he’s still in the public eye on NBA TV.

2. I don’t blame him one bit for calling the timeout. He traveled before it regardless and it wasn’t called. Not to mention he was trapped and George Lynch (UNC defender) distinctly remembers his bench (which was 2 feet away) yelling at him to call Time Out.

Courtney Lee didn’t make the list because he shouldn’t be a scapegoat on that recent play. You try hitting an alley-oop layup as you glide behind the basket with a 7-footer on you and tell me if that’s a gimme.
