Where You At Wednesday : Kaybee Toys

Back in the day, it was all about 2 toy stores. You had Toys R Us, and Kaybee Toys. If you are from the triangle area, then you could find Toys R Us at Crabtree Valley Mall and in Cary Crossroads (still in the Cary location now). Kaybee Toys catered to the old North Hills Mall, as well as Cary Towne Center Mall. However, the North Hills Mall has been gone for a while and KayBee Toys hasn’t been at Cary Towne Centre in ages. What happened to Kaybee Toys?

Well, the Monster has found out.  Kaybee Toys was founded in 1922 and at one point had 605 stores in 44 states. Before it’s demise, it was the second largest operator behind FAO Schwartz in the toy game. Then, it’s demise began. It faced 2 bankruptcy claims within 5 years and starting to undergo liquidation in December of 2008. By February of 2009, it was gone. In September of 2009, Toys R Us purchased the website, trademarks, and intellectual property rights of the company.

So much for “America’s Toy Store”. R.I.P.
