Thought that this week we could take a look at some comedians who were in the public eye a lot in the past, but now….not so much. Shouts to the homie Stonewall Jackson for the idea submit on this one. I feel like I missed someone or some people in this one, so feel free to email themixtapemonster@themixtapemonster.com and let me know who, and maybe we can get a second volume to this bad boy crackin’ at some point. Let’s get it in…
Gallagher
Leo Gallagher is a prop comic probably most famous for his watermelon smashing. He was actually born in Fort Bragg, NC (had to sneak that in there). His signature sketch is actually the “Sledge-o-Matic” where he sledgehammers everything from watermelons to toothpaste to Big Macs. Watermelons are the most famous though. He had atleast one special a year from 1981-1987, and was a popular and recognizable comic in those days. His last couple newsworthy items were the lawsuit he got involved in with his brother (who looked a lot like him and used to steal his act and tour as “Gallagher Too,” often making people furious who thought they had paid to see the real Gallagher…this led to estrangement from his family as he basically took his brother for what little money he had), and a 2005 interview where he bashed comedians like Robin Williams, Jim Carrey, and David Letterman. He was said to be mad that those people were making millions while he still rented a condo. He was also upset at Comedy Central’s 100 Greatest Comedians List, which had him at 100, right below Janeane Garafolo.
Sinbad
I’m going to go ahead and get this out in the open. I loved Sinbad in “Houseguest” when I was a kid. I thought that movie was hilarious. He wasn’t bad in “First Kid” either. He also starred in “A Different World.” He is one of the few famous comedians that doesn’t curse in his act. He even had his own show for a while in the early 90’s. He recently made a cameo as himself in “It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia” and has been annouced as one of the contestants on the next “Celebrity Apprentice.”
Paula Poundstone
Paula Poundstone is most well known for her self-depreciating humor and the way she dresses (often in suits and ties). She is #88 on Comedy Central’s best 100 standups of all time, and #7 on Maxim’s Worst Comics of All Time list. She had many specials and was pretty popular in the early 90’s. In 2001 she was arrested for 3 counts of committing a lewd act on a 14-year-old girl. She was also charged with endangerment to two young girls, and two young boys. This was apparently an added charge for driving her children while intoxicated. She plead no contest and got 5 years probation and 180 days in an alcohol center. Most recently she has appeared as a panelist on radio news quiz show “Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me” on NPR.
Andrew Dice Clay
Andrew Dice Clay (aka Dice aka The Diceman) is somewhat of a controversial comic for his excessive profanity, homophobia, and misogyny that litter his routines. The above routine actually got him banned from future MTV Awards for life. A couple classic recordings have sampled his voice. Ice Cube used one of his lines in “A Gangster’s Fairytale” : “Remember good ol’ Mother Goose? I fucked her.” Also, the “OH!” and “Unbelieveable” from EMF’s hit “Unbelieveable” are actually Diceman samples. Most recently, he was on “Celebrity Apprentice 2″ (voted off the first week) and 6 episodes in 2007 of a reality show on VH1 called “Dice Undisputed.”
Alonzo “Hamburger” Jones
I wanted at least one on this list that made you go “Who?” or “What the F?” and I’m pretty sure I accomplish it here. There’s pretty much nothing online or on Wikipedia about where this guy came from or what he’s up to now. He’s decently funny, but that whole “Hammmmmburger” thing is kind of annoying. The phrase is used to replace curse words or offensive remarks. According to the few sources I found, he’s still doing stand up shows.
