March 11, 2010 · 2 Comments

Submitted by Bibbles. Check out the news anchors in this vid and let’s hear what you think!

The Monster’s Votes: For the guys throwing down, I say regular dudes. I mean anyone willing to throw hands at their job while on television gets my vote. As for the anchor, I’m going CLOWN. Dude looks straight scared at the end of the clip when he clearly isn’t even a part of the scuffle.

Where You At Wednesday : TV Animal Edition

March 10, 2010 · 2 Comments

Every once in a while, and obviously in the past, TV shows come around that center around animals. They are the main characters. Lately, these shows have been geared towards children, but the most popular ones become successful and famous with adults as well. This week’s WU@W takes a look at some of the TV animals of the past, and their stories. PEEP IT.

LASSIE

Most likely the “holy grail” and most popular of the TV animals. I mean, who doesn’t know Lassie? Obviously, Lassie was played by several collies throughout the run of the show, but the collies were all male. The first Lassie’s real name was Pal, and he appeared in 7 MGM movies between 1943 and 1951, as well as the two pilots in 1954 for the television show. In all honesty, I didn’t know they had Lassie movies beforehand. See, people, we are learning things here! Until the 1990’s, EIGHT generations of Pal and his decendants played the character. These included Lassie Junior, Spook, Baby, Mire, Hey Hey, Boy, and The Old Man. Some of those names could have been more original if you ask me. The 1997 version of the show also featured Howard, a Pal descendant, and in January 2008, the 10th Lassie (Rockie, also a Pal descendant) was introduced. I haven’t found any info on that new show though.

FLIPPER

Flipper was a 1964 TV series that lasted until 1967. It came back in 1995-2000 and starred little known (at that point) Jessica Alba. There was also a 1996 film with Elijah Wood. However the original series dolphin Flipper was played by a female dolphin named Suzy. There were a few other females from time to time to get in on the action named Kathy, Patty, Squirt, and Scotty (really?). Female dolphins were less agressive, so were used instead of males. Only 1 dolphin, Clown, could do the trademark “tail walk” though and was brought in for those scenes.

Rin Tin Tin

Rin Tin Tin was featured in stories on TV, film, and radio, and dates all the way back to 1922. The original Rin Tin Tin was a shell-shocked puppy found by an American serviceman in a bombed-out dog kennel in France during World War I. The name Rin Tin Tin comes from a type of puppet that French children used to give to American soldiers for good luck during the war. Though not looking like one, many of Rin Tin Tin’s roles were as a wolf or wolf-hybrid. The first starring role the dog had was in 1923 for “Where the North Begins.” The huge success of this film some say kept Warner Bros in business, as they were almost bankrupt at the time. Though several television series, etc would spurt up later on, the original Rin Tin Tin’s run lasted from 1922-1931. The original dog died in 1932 and was transported back to his home country for burial.

Mister Ed

“Mister Ed” mainly aired from 1961-1966. The first horse that played Mister Ed was a chestnut gelding. However, the permanent star of the show was a Palomino horse named Bamboo Harvester of mixed ancestry. Two years after the end of the show, in 1968 Bamboo Harvester began to suffer from a bunch of health problems with his kidneys and arthritis. He was quietly euthanized without hub-bub in 1970.

Wishbone

“Wishbone” aired from 1995 to 1998 on PBS. Wishbone is mainly played by the Jack Russell Terrier named Soccer, but also at times by ones named Slugger, Shiner, Phoebe, and Bear. Soccer didn’t just portray Wishbone though, he was a seasoned actor appearing in Nike commercials, and Mighty Dog dog food. Soccer died in June of 2001 of natural causes.

The homies over at Broccoli City were kind enough to send this over. They got to attend the Dom Kennedy listening party recently. Dom was one of my favorite artists I discovered early last year. His song “Hard Work” still knocks out my whip on the regular. Very cool speech.

“From the Westside, with Love” coming soon. And it’s gonna be tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.

REST IN PEACE, BIG.

March 9, 2010 · 3 Comments

Christopher George Latore Wallace (May 21,1972 – March 9, 1997)

March 9th every year means I play all Biggie, all day. Perhaps the greatest rapper of all time. Rest in peace, Big. We’ll miss what you gave the game.

What are your favorite Biggie tracks? The Monster’s favorite three are probably “Gimme the Loot,” “Warning,” and “The Ten Crack Commandments.”
